Zone 3 Flowers: Bleeding Hearts


Description: Bleeding heart has attractive mounded foliage with arching stems of delicate, heart-shaped flowers in spring. It thrives in moist woodland gardens along with ferns and other shade-lovers. Bleeding heart grows best in cool, moist conditions. Flower colors include yellow, pink, red, and white.

Hardy: Zone 3

Bloom Time: Spring (may re-bloom in cooler areas)

Height: 6'' - 2' (depending on varieties)

Spacing: 18'' - 24''

Sun Needs: Shade to part shade

Water Needs: Medium

Outstanding Features: Beautiful heart shaped flowers

Uses: Pretty in the garden, to fill an area

Tips: After the first killing frost, cut stems back to an inch or two above soil line.

Seed Collecting: Bag seedheads to capture ripening seed. Allow pods to dry on plant; break open to collect seeds.
